Why aren’t we doing what we know we should be doing?

Sustainable Business Day 2024 filled the auditorium in the Rotunda at Campus Allegro on 11 September, where we followed the stream of ‘A Sustainable Future’ as one of the official hubs. We had more than 70 participants at the main event and around 40 continued with Concordia at the After Work at Station 23 as an nice end to the day! Thank you all who participated and joined the event!

‘A Sutainable Future’ started this time in an individual perspective and gathered around 30 000 participants from all over the Nordic countries. The problem with sustainability and the circular economy is that it is complex and that we as individuals find it difficult to maneuver in the sea of information sources. How should we choose and what is actually more sustainable?

The theme was dissonance, which could be explained by a cognitive ambiguity in how we should act with the information we have. Several contributions also touched on the bigger picture. The system, policy and legislation. Nationally, at European level and globally. There was a fair degree of consensus that many issues are too big for the individual, we also need a change at system level. Maybe a whole new operating system?

We ended the conference with an incisive, but also worrying, global analysis by Fredrik Reinfeldt, who also delved into the significance of the US presidential election and the polarization that Europe and Finland are also facing in politics. Reinfeldt is fundamentally optimistic and noted that the Nordic Region has done a lot and is on the right track. He is also choosing the path of not giving up, saying that the right way is to change and do things in a new way. One step at a time. And I think that fits well with the mentality in the Jakobstad Region. Let’s keep up the good work!

At the After Work, we had some light-hearted chats with Concordia’s project manager’s in sustainability about the projects’ opportunities to make an impact and the challenges we face, as well as some of our media agencies about sustainability communication. The same conclusion here – the region is doing a lot of good things, but we can always develop and get better!
