The Jakobstad Region sparks strong interest among engineering students at Otaniemi career fair

Teknologföreningen vid Aalto universitet organized a career fair in Otaniemi on 20 January, bringing together engineering students from Aalto University. A total of 11 exhibitors participated, including Wärtsilä, Fortum, Ramboll and Sitowise. Baltic Yachts, Alholmen Industrial Park and the Jakobstad Region participated jointly, highlighting the region’s broad industrial base and future career opportunities.

Many first-year students attended the event and were actively seeking summer jobs and internships. During the afternoon, several discussions were held with students majoring in automation, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering or energy technology. The participants had clear career goals and areas of interest, which contributed to a high quality of dialogue and interaction.

The Baltic Yachts booth attracted a lot of interest and became a natural gathering point for conversations about advanced technology, innovative solutions on board luxury sailing yachts as well as the company’s advanced and highly specialised manufacturing process. One of the key success factors was that the company’s representatives shared similar educational backgrounds with the target audience. During the day, Baltic Yachts’ engineers had to answer several technically advanced and insightful questions, which further strengthened the dialogue with the students.

The Jakobstad Region’s diverse business landscape surprised students positively

Many students showed interest in the job opportunities available in the Jakobstad region and were pleasantly surprised by the wide range of companies and summer jobs. To most people, the Jakobstad region seems to be quite unknown, while Vaasa was more familiar. The students who had Ostrobothnian roots said that they often spent their summers in the Jakobstad region’s archipelago, which points to an already existing but partly untapped connection to the region.

Attracting skilled talent is a long-term effort that requires purposeful collaboration, attractive employers and strong conditions for quality of life. The Jakobstad region and Alholmen Industrial Park received positive feedback from the organizers for the concept of gathering several companies under the common brand “The Best Place in the World”, an arrangement that proved to work well even in the meeting with engineering students.
