New Year – New Opportunities!

A Regional Development Perspective

In a turbulent global environment, it’s not always easy to find one’s bearings. And it’s hard to disagree that uncertainty plays quite a significant role right now.
But it usually pays off to look for positive motivation after the New Year – and there are glimmers of hope!

In MDI’s EVP Overall Index for 2025, the Jakobstad Region ranks 12th in the country. Not bad for a smaller regional city, and not far behind the Vaasa Region. EVP is an extensive index with around 20 key factors that measure both vitality and the ability to attract and retain residents. We are breathing down the necks of the leading group, so let’s roll up our sleeves and proudly continue pursuing top positions.

So where do our strengths lie? Compared to the large cities, our public sector is relatively small, meaning we build vitality primarily through our private business sector. Strong companies that want to develop and grow. Companies that sell goods and services globally, supported by diverse subcontractor networks. And with over 60% of the added value being export-based, one must stay alert in today’s global environment to compete on the world market. Something our companies do every day. With pride.

The private-sector financial statements for 2024, now available in the official statistics, show an increase in both turnover and profit in the Jakobstad Region. Total private-sector turnover reached just over €4.76 billion in 2024 – an increase from €4.69 billion in 2023. The workforce is also growing, currently at 23,384. Despite an increase in closed companies (actually not that many bankruptcies), the number of active companies in the region continues to increase and now stands at around 8,300.

The region is also growing in population, even though growth slowed somewhat in 2025 compared to previous years. In December 2025, the Jakobstad Region had a total of 50,577 inhabitants. We are successfully maintaining a steady level above 50,000.

Vitality is also built on quality of life – and that is something “The Best Place in the World” can offer. Short distances, diverse and relatively affordable housing, proximity to nature and cultural life, and an amazing variety of associations and clubs. Vibrant municipalities that, supported by state subsidies and strengthened by tax revenue, can offer good education and strong living conditions. All of this is in place in the Jakobstad Region.

This quality of life is increasingly challenged by a turbulent global environment, which may very well be our trump card for continued growth and development – something our diverse business community is clearly ready for. If larger investments and business establishments land in the Jakobstad Region, or with our neighbours to the north and south, the growth potential becomes even greater.

Of course, we face challenges as well, but those can be saved for a later article. For now, we enter the new year with a positive outlook! Feel free to contact us if you need statistics or arguments for “The Best Place in the World” – the Jakobstad Region.
