Passenger Rail
The Kokkola–Seinäjoki railway carried 2.32 million passenger journeys in 2024, with continued growth forecast. The Jakobstad Region is served by Jakobstad–Pedersöre Railway Station and Kokkola Railway Station, providing efficient connections across Finland.
Freight Rail
Rail plays an important role in the region’s industrial logistics. The electrified rail connection serves industrial areas and supports freight transport between production facilities, the Port of Jakobstad and Finland’s national railway network.
Road Network
European Route 8
• European Route E8 is the main north–south road connection along Finland’s west coast. It links the Jakobstad Region with cities, ports and industrial centres from Turku in the south to Oulu in the north and forms part of Finland’s national main-road network.
• The route is included in the European Union’s trans-European transport network, TEN-T (comprehensive network).
Main Road 68
• Connects Virrat and Jakobstad, linking National Roads 23 and 8. It is the primary road connection between the Port of Jakobstad, the city and inland Finland and it provides an important connection for industrial and freight traffic.

Main Road 19
• Main Road 19 is an important north–south road connection in western Finland. Part of Finland’s national main road network (Service Level I), supporting western Finland’s heavy industry and providing an important freight corridor for industrial and port traffic.

Kokkola-Pietarsaari Airport
• Kokkola-Pietarsaari Airport serves both the Jakobstad and Kokkola regions. Scheduled connections provide access to Helsinki Airport and onward connections to domestic and international destinations. The airport’s main runway is 2,500 metres long.
• Kokkola-Pietarsaari Airport was one of Finland’s fastest-growing regional airports in early 2026, recording the second-highest growth in domestic passenger traffic among Finavia’s airports in March and ranking among the top three for the first quarter overall.
Port
Port of Jakobstad
The Port of Jakobstad handles around one million tonnes of cargo annually and offers 900 metres of quay, an 11-metre fairway depth and more than 47,000 m² of covered warehousing. Operated by Euroports, the port provides regular liner services to key European markets and specialises in forest products, project cargo and multimodal logistics.
Port of Kokkola
Located north of the Jakobstad Region, the Port of Kokkola is one of Finland’s largest ports and specialises particularly in bulk and rail-based cargo. More than 600 vessels call at the port annually. Its 14-metre fairway and deep-water facilities accommodate large Panamax- and Capesize-class vessels.
